Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great source of both protein and healthy fatty acids. They should be raw and organic. Most nuts and seeds are fine. Dr. Rhoads' favorites are almonds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds (raw organic, only) and flax seeds (ground).

The oils in nuts and seeds oxidize when exposed to light, so if possible, buy nuts and seeds in the shell. (Almonds are usually o.k. as the skin is protective.) Buy oils and nut butters in lightproof containers whenever possible.

Peanuts are legumes, not nuts. They should never be eaten cooked or roasted. (Roasted peanuts will kill a monkey in two or three weeks!). During the holidays, the increased intake of canned and packaged nuts is responsible for malfunctioning ileocecal valves which provoke a lot of clinical mischief.

Avoid cashews as they are toxic.
